History of DENR - Negros Island Region

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Negros Island Region (DENR-NIR) was operationalized thru Executive Order 183 creating a Negros Island Region and for other purposes signed on may signed by his excellency, president Benigno S. Aquino III on May 29, 2015 and became effective upon publication on June 5, 2015, creating the new Negros Island Region composed of the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, including all the cities, municipalities and barangays therein.

Under said Executive Order 192 by President Corazon Aquino on June 10, 1987, DENR-NIR comprised of five (5) technical services: the forestry, lands, environment and protected areas, mines and geo-sciences, and research.  As support, finance, legal, administrative, and planning services were also provided. For every province, a provincial environment and natural resources office was created to oversee and coordinate the implementation of DENR programs and projects within its administrative jurisdiction.  Simultaneous with the creation of provincial environment and natural resources offices, community environment and natural resources offices were also created in some cities and municipalities which are centrally located to most of the projects.  This is to provide more accessibility to the target clienteles and beneficiaries.
